Andover College celebrates opportunities in the creative industries

Andover College invited in hundreds of Year 9 pupils to Create!, an opportunity to actively consider their futures with a particular focus on the creative industries. Held on 6 March 2019, the event consisted of a range of exciting activities led by staff members, students and visiting universities.

Hosted at The Lights Theatre, the inspiring and eye-opening event included a hands-on experience zone featuring interactive activities from University of Portsmouth, University of Winchester, Winchester School of Art, Arts University Bournemouth and Risual at Andover. Meanwhile back in the College the staff, students and The Red Biscuit Company led a variety of workshops to open students’ eyes to the possibilities within the creative industries.

The UK’s creative industry sector is growing faster than any other sector in the UK contributing £92 billion to the economy. Government statistics show that in 2017 the number of people employed within the creative industries stood at just over two million, accounting for 6% of all UK jobs.

Louise, from Arts University Bournemouth, said: “It’s really important to show the diversity of options in the creative industries and the opportunities that are out there. It’s also key to challenge pupils’ perceptions of creative industries, for example architecture may be considered as not creative but today we’re showing how it can be!”

Fred and Josh, both third year Game Design students from Winchester School of Art were showcasing their final project and demonstrating to the students what they could potentially be creating in the future. Fred said: “This event plays an important role helping show young people what possibilities are out there and giving them a taste of what they can expect from the creative field. It’s so important to show the younger generation that they can go into a creative industry if that’s what they’re passionate about.”

Ben Stokes, Assistant Principal at Andover College said: “After the success of last year’s Women in Digital Industries event, we wanted to showcase the exciting opportunities that exist in the Creative Industries. This multi-billion-pound industry offers jobs you may never have considered before and this is why we feel so strongly about this event.”

At Andover College, the Creative Arts courses are some of the most popular and successful courses. They help to develop skills, knowledge and confidence which are valuable transferable skills.
