Students planning to ace the BASE competition

Some 21 Andover College students from a variety of courses have taken part in the first heat of BASE, the ICAEW (Institution of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales)’s National Business and Accounting competition for students in school or college aged 16-17. The students had to work in teams to address the business and ethical challenges presented to them. Representatives from ICAEW came to the College to mentor students throughout this initial process and were able to see first hand how enthused our students are.

Lecturer Hannah Murphy said: “This was a unique and exciting experience, students are able to engage in business challenges that enable them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.” More than 13,000 students from hundreds of schools and colleges have participated in BASE since its launch, supported by numerous ICAEW Chartered Accountants and organisations from across the business world as well as the public and voluntary sectors.”

Hannah continued: “To have competitions like this available to students is invaluable and develops a multitude of skills, so my thanks to ICAEW for making this possible.”

The students are working towards a presentation in which they have to decide in their teams from a series of proposals which best suits the investor. This needs to be completed by Easter 2019 and students will be working on this from now until then, in the hope they pass this heat and make it to the finals, so watch this space!
