Andover College students gain real-world construction experience through Taylor Wimpey partnership
Andover College construction students are getting hands-on industry experience thanks to a major partnership with housebuilder Taylor Wimpey and Test Valley Borough Council.
As part of the Employment and Skills Plan for Taylor Wimpey’s The Forum housing development in Andover, students have been offered the opportunity to step out of the classroom and onto a live construction site. So far, 10 learners from the College’s construction and trade courses have taken part, with further placements set to run later this year.
The placements allow students to put their skills into practice, build confidence, and gain first-hand experience of working in the construction sector — vital preparation for their future careers.
The partnership goes beyond site experience. Taylor Wimpey has supported careers events at Andover College, Harrow Way, and John Hanson schools, while apprentices and graduates are already contributing to the development itself.
Graham Ayrton, Business Development Manager at Andover College, said:
“Our students have really valued the chance to get out on site and see how their classroom learning applies in practice. Partnerships like this help bridge the gap between education and employment, and we’re grateful to Taylor Wimpey and Test Valley Borough Council for making this possible.”
Phil North, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, added:
“This is a great example of how planning can deliver wider benefits for our community. It’s fantastic to see students gaining hands-on experience that could shape their future careers.”
Sarah Pasco, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey West London, said:
“We’re committed to supporting the communities where we build, and that includes helping young people develop the skills they need to succeed. It’s been a pleasure working with the College and Council to create these opportunities.”
