Andover College Public Service Students Reach New Heights
Andover College Public Service students have been putting their climbing skills to good use, raising over £200 for local charity, The Jamie G Sporting Trust. Eleven students collectively climbed 3407 metres, the equivalent of the famous ‘three peaks’ of Snowdon, Scafel Pike and Ben Nevis at the Golden Gecko Climbing Wall in Romsey with each students averaging and impressive 56 climbs over an hour and a half.
Lecturer Tim Parker said: “As any experienced climbers will tell you 56 climbs in an hour and a half is very hard going. The students organised the fundraiser themselves and had to push themselves physically, utilising all the skills and techniques they had been taught to complete the challenge.”
All Andover College Public Service students are signed up to take part in the National Citizen Service (NCS), a youth empowerment programme where participants build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and adventures. The three peak fundraising climb was part of the ‘Social Action’ element of the NCS which also includes an Adventure Sports Residential and an Independent Living Residential. The NCS is being delivered by local NCS provider Norman Gate School, West Tytherley.
The Public Service course provides students with the skills, preparation, discipline and level of fitness required for a career in the public and uniformed services including the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and other Uniformed Services including the Prison Service and the Marine and Coastguard Agency, studying modules such as government policies, leadership and teamwork and citizenship and diversity. In 2015 the College achieved 100% pass rate for students on the Public Service courses.
