Andover College celebrates the winners of its Esports competition
Andover College recently hosted a competition in Esports to support students and apprentices in developing the high-level skills employers are looking for.
Andover College were delighted to welcome and host teams from Wiltshire College, New College Swindon and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College on Thursday 26 March. The competition, endorsed by WorldSkills UK, the world-class network, saw Esports students from four colleges go head-to-head in Overwatch 2 and Valorant. Streamed live on Twitch, the event showcased the skills of the competitors and the facilities on offer at the college from the Esports Arena to Media Broadcast suite that facilitated live shout casting.
The winners were Wiltshire College coming first with Andover College a close second.
WorldSkills UK’s programmes are seen as an integral part of the post-16 education and training calendar. Andover College has been working with WorldSkills UK to use its Local Skills Competitions Endorsement Framework to support its students and apprentices in developing their technical and employability skills to higher levels.
George Hoare, Curriculum Lead, Andover College said: “The esports event pitted our students against other college’s, not only did they need to demonstrate skills and strategies within Overwatch 2 and Valorant – they also had to review their game play critically analysing their choice of tactics throughout the matches. I am pleased to announce that the Andover College Esports team finished the event in 2nd place. A special mention goes to the students that helped run and broadcast the event!”
Parisa Shirazi, Director of Standards, WorldSkills UK said: “Congratulations to all those who took part in the Esports competition. Competition-based learning is recognised by educators as one of the most powerful tools for driving quality improvement, as well as developing and assessing technical skills. This Framework is designed to raise standards, inspire ambition, and provide teaching staff and learners with access to world-class skills development to meet the rapidly changing demands of both existing and emerging industries.”
