Practical Horticulture – Award – Sparsholt qualification
What will I learn?
This course is aimed at the keen gardener, career changer, new employees in the horticultural trade and staff looking to improve their knowledge of practical horticulture working for Local Authorities and landscape companies.
It is a practical course with only the identification section taught as theory.
This is a bespoke Sparsholt College qualification.
It is a 16-week course based in the horticultural section of Sparsholt College taught by knowledgeable and experienced tutors.
There are no exams in the course just a weekly plant identification test.
The course will be practically assessed by the tutors.
Subjects covered may include: Cultivations and No-Dig growing, Plant Identification, Selection and Maintenance, Vegetable and fruit growing, Lawn care and wildflower meadows, Propagation techniques, Soil analysis , Pest and disease identification and controls
Organic growing techniques, Protected cropping /greenhouse growing/Container growing and small Machinery usage.
Entry Requirements
No entry requirements necessary for this course. The course is aimed at hobbyists and keen gardeners wanting to gain knowledge and skills in Horticulture.
Further Information
Steel toe capped boots or very sturdy walking boots/approach shoes are essential for the participation of this course.

Due to funding restrictions this course is not available to existing full time Sparsholt College/Andover College students aged 16, 17 or 18 (or 19-24 with an EHCP) on the 31/8 in the year they started/start their course.
