Photography and Film Making – A Level
We are surrounded and immersed in photography and cinematography constantly – through social media, journalism, books and magazines. You may take numerous photographs and videos daily, with the need to capture the world around you. This dynamic course will enable you to take more considered photographs and video content and elevate your content to help it to stand out. You will learn about the use of moving and still images as a means of communicating personal ideas through storyboards, shot types, movement and angles, set design, composition, lighting & sound.
Studying Filmmaking is an exhilarating fusion of cinematic storytelling and visual art. It is deeply relevant in today’s media-heavy landscape, empowering you to move from passive consumption to professional-grade creation.
Current students typically find the most joy in the technical freedom of the course; they love experimenting with composition, lighting, cinematography, and non-linear editing to build immersive worlds. Our course stands out through its unrivalled focus on individual style. We treat every learner as a budding auteur, providing industry-standard software and bespoke studio spaces. This high-level technical support, combined with a rigorous focus on the “moving image as art,” ensures our learners develop a sophisticated, professional portfolio that truly commands attention.
The first stage of the course is delivered through a series of practical workshops. These are explored through photographic scenarios such as editorial and commercial, fashion, storytelling, portraiture, architecture, experimental, still life and living pictures. Throughout your time with us you will be using use of industry standard editing software.
Once you have explored and been introduced to camera techniques, digital editing, darkroom photography and the lighting studio, you will identify the direction you want to take your photography in, and set about producing a portfolio of specialist photographic work.

Photography can lead to careers in photojournalism, fashion photography, wildlife photography, fine art events and forensic photography. However, it can also feed into several creative industries such as marketing and advertising. What opportunities are there beyond doing Filmmaking at college – the list is endless, the creative industries are one of the biggest employers in the country, especially in the South West and South East of England
You may also wish to progress on to a pre-degree Foundation Diploma in Art and Design offered at Andover College, rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

A studio fee and kit list is set in August of each year for each course. They can be purchased from the College via the online College shop. There may be print costs throughout the year depending on projects. The College has support funds available for those students who have difficulty meeting the costs.
There will be the opportunity for a variety of trips and visits on a rolling programme that include, UK cities such as London, Brighton or Oxford and residential trips that have included, Paris, Madrid, Berlin and New York and Design Museum, Various Galleries,
Digital Suite using Adobe products, Photography lighting studio, Darkroom, Cameras, kit and lenses.
