Mathematics – A Level
A Level Mathematics is about working with patterns and structures found in science and technology. From computers and space exploration to body scanners and medicine, understanding these patterns help explain and control natural happenings and situations.
A level Mathematics at Andover College offers a supportive learning experience. Small class sizes mean receiving individual attention and where questions can be asked freely, helping build confidence and understanding. You’ll be taught by an experienced maths teacher, who will explain challenging ideas clearly and support you at every stage. The course benefits from links with the University of Portsmouth and others, in industry, giving valuable insight into higher‑level study and future pathways. Mathematics also connects closely with the science subjects at the College, allowing you to see how ideas link across disciplines and prepare effectively for STEM courses and careers. There is a wealth of free maths resources available, in college and online, in order to support self study and revision.
In both A Level years, you will study Pure and Applied Mathematics.
Pure Maths includes:
- Algebra
- Trigonometry
- Coordinate geometry
- Calculus
- Numerical methods
Applied Maths provides a choice between:
- Mechanics: forces, energy, motion, kinematics, projectiles, and mathematical modelling
- Statistics: probability, data handling, probability distributions, correlation and regression and hypothesis testing.
Three exam papers, each two hours long at the end of the second year. Scientific calculators are allowed for all papers.
This course can help you to progress into a wide variety of careers including accountancy, aerospace, biosciences, engineering and exploration geophysics.
Year 1: Science museum and Imperial College Genetic laboratories
Year 2: CERN – Large hadron collider, Geneva and Chamonix
You will be taught in our Andover Sixth building and will have access to many different facilities, including: 2 study centres, a Library, A canteen and the Careers Hub.
