A Level Fine Art & Design Crafts will give you the opportunity to explore new approaches to Fine Art and designed crafts through the traditional methods of painting, drawing and printmakingYou will build skills in creativity, communication, research and independence. By exploring the potential of different media, you will have the opportunity to interpret your work further through innovative outcomes such as installation, sculpture, interior experiences and performance. Investigate: your own ideas through observing. Create: become skilful in making by exploring a range of materials and processes. Communicate visually: become aware of how your work can be conveyed through presentation and curation. 

Five GCSEs at grade 9 – 4, including English, Maths and a Creative subject – or portfolio.

 

First Year 

 A collection of coursework that introduces you to a range of 2D and 3D skills to develop through a variety of creative media and techniques with a gradual progression towards individual ways of working. You will have the opportunity to work on a large scale in 2D and 3D  

Contextual understanding: making personal perceptions and connections with the work of others and studying the wider context of art in the everyday.  

 

Second Year 

A personal investigation developing a theme or idea of your choice. This is supported by 1,000 – 3,000 words which can be presented in a variety of ways.  

An externally set exam with a selection of written words or images as starting points. This includes preparation time and a 15 hour supervised exam 

 

Component 1 – Personal Investigation (worth 60% of A Level) 

Internally assessed, externally moderated. 

 

Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment (worth 40% of A Level) 

15 hours of sustained focus work. Internally assessed, externally moderated 

 

Fine Art and design craft can be continued at Higher Education and offers career paths in areas such as illustration, concept art, theatre stage and set design, gallery curation and administration, conservation and restoration, arts education and art therapy.  

Degree courses: BA Hons Fine Art, BA Hons Illustration, BA Hons Printmaking, Ba Hons Concept Art, BA Hons Creative Arts, BA Hons Creative Writing, BA Hons History of Art, BA Hons Curatorial Studies, BA Hons Arts & Festival Management, BA Hons Event, Exhibition & Performance 

You may also wish to progress on to a pre-degree Foundation Diploma in Art and Design offered at Andover College, rated Outstanding by Ofsted. 

 

A studio fee and kit list is set in August of each year for each course. They can be purchased from the College via the online College shop. There may be print costs throughout the year depending on projects. The College has support funds available for those students who have difficulty meeting the costs. 

 

You will study the work of a wide range of artists and you will have the opportunity to take part in visits to both national and international art galleries. We expect you to want to participate in seeing works of art at first-hand rather than via the internet. 

 

Open plan studios with access to a range of 2D and 3D materials and equipment. Interior and exterior space to create large scale pieces along with lino, etching and screenprinting facilities.
