The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Computing is equivalent in size to one A Level.  It is aimed at learners who are interested in an initial introduction to study of the Computing sector at Level 3 alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses. It allows learners to gain fundamental knowledge and skills in computing from which they can progress to broader or more specialist study at Level 3.  As part of the Digital Futures programme, you will need to take two additional Level 3 subjects alongside this one. To develop the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in the Digital Industry and your progression. 

 

From School  – Five GCSEs at grades 9-4, Including English at grade 9-4 and a minimum grade 6 in Maths.

 

The objective of this qualification is to provide learners with access to subject knowledge and skills in computer science and computer systems, enabling learners to progress to further study of the sector or other sectors.  

Year One 

You study the BTEC Certificate in Computing (equivalent to an AS Level) 

The first year is made up of two units, both core units 

  • Unit 02: Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Core) 
  • Unit 07: IT Systems Security and Encryption. (Core) 

Year Two 

In your second year you study for the Extended Certificate in Computing. 

The second year has one Core Unit. 

  • Unit 01: Principles of Computer Science (Core) 
  • Unit 17: Mobile Apps Development

Our Expectation 

You will need to be committed in producing work to a high standard and to developing strong computer and problem-solving skills, as well as be willing to show evidence of an active interest in the Computing industry. You will be expected to work independently outside of class and use different techniques to produce assignment work. We offer the most up-to-date software, preparing you for the requirements of the workplace. 

 

Year One:  

  • Unit 02 One Exam 
  • Unit 07 Two assignments 

Year Two 

  • Unit 01 One Exam (Synoptic) 
  • Unit 17 Two Assignments 

 

  • HNC Creative Digital Technology at Andover College 
  • A Foundation Degree in a related subject  
  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Computer Science or related subject 
  • Employment in the IT sector, System Security, App Developer, IT Training or Software Development. 
  • Apprenticeship – Infrastructure Technician 

You will have various guest speakers from the industry come in throughout the course. Previous trips include; Bletchley Park and National Computer Museum 

 

You will have access to computers with industry standard Software, a Hardware and Software Lab and VR Headsets
