Bee Keeping – Introduction

What will I learn?

This introductory course will cover topics including the history of Bees and beekeeping, bee colonies, the beekeeping year and life cycle, hives and their components and tools needed, processing of honey and beeswax and how to manage bee health, pests and other challenges as well as how to get started in beekeeping. You will receive a copy of the book ‘British Beekeepers Association Guide to Beekeeping’.
The course runs over 6 Monday evenings in Feb-April, from 6pm – 8pm, plus a 2-3 hour session at a weekend (date & time dictated by weather and size of class, but likely 20th or 21st April) to carry out beehive inspections at our own apiary on campus.

Where will it lead me?

The information acquired during this course will help you to decide to join a local association to importantly provide a mentor and support to help set up your own hives in a well chosen area.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for anyone who is considering or planning to start beekeeping. we would recommend a minimum age of 16 and no maximum age.

Any fee remission information quoted is correct at the current time but is dependent on government legislation and is subject to change. Due to funding restrictions this course is not available to existing full time Sparsholt College/Andover College students aged 16, 17 or 18 (or 19-24 with an EHCP) on the 31/8 in the year they started/start their course.
