Applied Law – BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/ National Extended Certificate
The Applied Law qualification will provide the opportunity for learners to showcase their skills and apply their knowledge in an appropriate, work-related context, in the study of Law. The course provides an introduction to the legal sector and key aspects of law to develop both knowledge and application. Learners will be able to present their ideas in a range of ways including report writing, presentations and leaflets.
Explore real-life cases from civil and criminal law to see how they have shaped and play a role in our current laws. Provides awareness.
Ability to apply law to their everyday lives e.g. how police powers work.
Current learners enjoy learning about the substantive areas of law, mainly the criminal law unit where they get the explore offences against the person (non-fatal and fatal offences) and property offences (theft, robbery, burglary). They also like police powers as they are applicable to career prospects and everyday life and general defences to crimes.
Character names are used in scenarios for the internally assessed units so learners can apply to popular culture references
Option unit 4 Family Law is not often chosen by other colleges.
You will have an introduction to the English legal system as well as the analysis and evaluation of substantive areas of law.
- Criminal Law: Basic elements of a crime, non-fatal offences, homicide offences, property offences and general defences
- Civil Law: Negligence and the court system including legal personnel
- Family Law: Marriage, civil partnership, nullity, divorce, financial orders, orders for children
Units Covered:
Year One – BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Law (equivalent to an AS Level)
Unit 1: Dispute Solving in Civil Law (External Assessment)
Unit 2: Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System (Internal Assessment)
Year Two – BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Law (equivalent to an A-Level)
Unit 3: Applying the Law (External Assessment)
Unit 4: Aspects of Family Law (Internal Assessment)
To succeed in this course you will need to be hard-working, dedicated to study, have strong writing skills and an ability to succeed in assessments. You will also be expected to work in your own time, in addition to class time, in order to achieve the highest grades.

Applied Law is designed to develop skills for the further study of law or law related courses or towards an apprenticeship in the legal sector. The qualification can lead to many different career paths including those in the legal profession, Government, civil service, probation service and police force, among many others.

Learners are provided links to external opportunies in law and work experience, e.g. Citizens Advice volunteering, Hampshire Constabulary Observer Scheme, The Sutton Trust Law pathway and summer school and various other legal firm/university opportunities.
Competitions from Parliament and other education services
Guest speakers from solicitor visit, barrister visit from the armed forces, current Law student studying at university (from 1st year – 3rd year), police officer and detective visit, probation officer visit.
You will be taught in our Andover Sixth building and will have access to many different facilities, including: 2 study centres, a Library, A canteen and the Careers Hub.
