Applied Human Biology is ideally suited for students who wish to pursue a career in the health sector.  As part of the course you will study a range of topics such as the structure of the human body, microbiology and factors that influence the health of individuals. 

You will also have plenty of opportunities to put theory into practice where you will design and conduct practicals throughout the course. This provides valuable experience that can be applied into your next steps of employment of higher education.  

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including Maths, Science and English Language . BTEC Level 2 qualifications considered in subject related courses.

 

Year One  

  • Principles of Applied Human Biology 
  • Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Year Two 

  • Human Biology and Health Issues 

and one optional unit from:  

  • Functional Physiology 
  • Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies 
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering 
  • Biomedical Science  
  • Human Reproduction and Fertility 

 

The course is assessed through a combination of coursework and 1 external exam each year 

 

This two-year course generates the same UCAS tariff points as one A-level. 

Depending on what other subjects are studied alongside the Extended Certificate in Applied Human Biology a range of Higher Education courses are available, including; Midwifery/Nursing, Physiotherapy,  

Biomedical Science and Physiological Science. 

 

There are field trips to the Natural History Museum in London, Marwell Zoo, sparsholt college fisheries unit and a mandatory residential field trip of two nights three days to complete unit 4 in the summer term.  

 

You will have access to a suite of superbly equipped laboratory facilities divided between physics, biology, chemistry and environmental science.  

You have access to well-equipped laboratories which have been recently modernised and been much admired as a great practical learning space as well as support from our science technicians.
