Each year the Criminology course comprises of two units; one assessed through a controlled assessment and the other is assessed by an exam. During the first year, you will study the psychology of crime as well as analysing how the media reports crime. In year 2, you will investigate the techniques used in the investigation of a crime and you will also consider the effectiveness of different strategies used to reduce criminality from custodial sentences through to community orders.  The 2 year course is equivalent to 1 A Level and can be taken alongside other A Levels and BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma subjects. 

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including Maths and a minimum grade 4 in English Language.  BTEC Level 2 qualifications considered in subject related courses. 

 

Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals. During your first year, you will study the psychology of crime as well as analysing how the media reports crime. In year 2, you will investigate the techniques used in the investigation of a crime such as forensics and the judiciary process. You will also consider the effectiveness of different strategies used to reduce criminality from custodial sentences through to community orders.  

Year One 

  • Changing Awareness of Crime
  • Criminological Theories

Year one of this course is the Level 3 Certificate in Criminology (equivalent to an AS Level).  

Year Two 

  • Crime Scene to Courtroom
  • Crime and Punishment

Year two of this course is the Level 3 Diploma in Criminology (equivalent to an A Level). 

 

50% Controlled Assessment and 50% Exam 

 

Studying criminology alongside other level 3 subjects can provide entry into Higher Education. Popular degree courses that criminology students have progressed to include; BA (Hons) Criminology, BSc (Hons) Criminology and Psychology, BA (Hons) Forensic Studies and LLB (Hons) Law 

 

You will have the opportunity to go on a number of field trips and excursions including: Houses of Parliament, Supreme Court, Winchester Crown Court and Shepton Mallet Prison  

 

You will be taught in our Andover Sixth building and will have access to many different facilities, including: 2 study centres, a Library, A canteen and the Careers Hub.
