Andover College’s Music Academy students welcomed Label Managers Rob and Lesley from Lockjaw Records on Thursday. Lockjaw records came in to the college to talk to Music Academy students about the music industry and how to run your own record label. They delivered a fun and interactive talk that showed the students the ins and outs of how to run a record label and included activities that got the students thinking about creating their own record label.

Lockjaw Records is a European punk rock and hardcore label founded in 1997 by brothers Jack, Sam and Ben. The label was then relaunched by Rob in 2011 with Lesley joining him in 2014. Now in 2018 the label is supported by a community of hardworking individuals from across the European scene.

Music lecturer, Nick, said “It is an amazing experience for our students to hear what the industry is like from genuine music industry professionals. The talk was great as it fitted in with what our students are currently studying, and gave them great insight for their assignments”

Label Manager, Rob, said: ‘’It was a fantastic experience coming in and meeting the future artists and talents who will be helping the scene stay alive for another generation. The students were really attentive and had brilliant ideas. With the clear passion I suspect to see them all soon working as part of the industry.’’

Andover College pride themselves on offering their students the best possible college experience, we do this by offering interactive lessons every day. To find out more, come along to an open event.

A renewed performance space has been created at Andover College for student and public hire. The intriguingly titled ‘1803 Theatre’ is named to commemorate the first theatre to open in Andover in, you guessed it, 1803!

Students celebrated the opening by giving a variety of performances. These included song, dance and drama for VIP invited guests, including Deputy Mayor Councillor Martin Hatley. Students then performed Mark Wheeller’s play ‘I love you Mum – promise I won’t die’.

The original 1803 theatre in Andover used to stand on Newbury Road before being demolished. To this day, it remains something of an enigma. Deputy Principal Martin Simmons said: “Today’s ‘1803 Theatre’ at the College aims to strengthen and support our strong links within the local community, as well as start conversations about the thespian history of our town. This new development is yet another great opportunity for us to extend our offer to local organisations and further integrate ourselves into the heart of Andover.”

As well as various in-house shows, the College are keen to make the 1803 Theatre facility available for local theatre groups and schools to enjoy at very competitive prices. The performance space is a fully rigged 100-seat studio theatre and home to Andover’s outstanding range of Performing Arts subjects which prepare students for university or the performing industry.

Dance student, Bethany from Salisbury commented on the quality of the facilities and teaching during her studies. She said: “To anyone thinking of doing a Performing Arts course at Andover College, I assure you it’s a time in your life you’ll never forget. My course came highly recommended and expanded my knowledge on dance practice and how I can build a promising future in the industry.

Andover College has been preparing young women for dynamic futures in Digital Technologies with their recent, ‘Women into Digital Industries’ event. Held on International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018, the event showed over 600 students aged 13-14 from local schools how a technological career path is desirable across a diverse range of sectors.

Hosted at The Lights Theatre, the inspiring event included a range of local and national women speakers sharing their personal experiences and advice, highlighting the wealth of opportunities available in the digital sector. Hands-on experience was also available to bring students’ learning to life across forward-thinking technologies from animation to virtual reality and robotics!

Lana Suhova, a former Andover College student and creator of Dalry Rose Digital’s message to young girls was to embrace the digital world, saying: “I never imagined a love of blogging and social media could turn into a business for me. Over the years I’ve had opportunities to work with international brands including Topshop and Harrods through my online presence so my advice to young women is use the digital tools around you to your advantage and have fun, because you never know where a creative passion could take you!”

Meg Bullock, Digital Marketing Officer and Andover Marketing Coordinator said: “Our first ‘Women into Digital Industries’ event was a phenomenal success. The venue was buzzing with energy all day and it was so rewarding to expose students to the scope of digital careers available in the UK’s fastest growing industry. There is a shortage of females in technological sectors today, however by showcasing some of the industry’s leading ladies we’re confident young women in our community will engage, create and learn the vibrant digital skills for future successes.”

Andover College praised by Ofsted as high expectations lead to an increasing “proportion of students gaining high grades at A Level” and college leaders having “successfully improved the quality of the student experience and student outcomes”

In a strong endorsement of the college’s approach and achievement the inspectors noted that, since their last inspection in 2014: “leaders, managers and governors have continued to provide a consistent good quality of education for students” adding that the college had gone from strength to strength across the board having “successfully improved the quality of the student experience and student outcomes” with “improved achievements for students on 16 to 19 programmes, for the majority of adult learners and for those apprentices on programmes directly delivered by your staff.”

The report reaffirmed an unblemished track record of equipping students with the best teaching, facilities and industry links to enable them to achieve their goals at college and beyond.

College Principal Tim Jackson felt the report was a resounding endorsement of the college’s commitment to excellence and said: “Inspectors saw the College operating in a normal way and this report validates our everyday commitment to exceptionally high standards and support for students. I am so pleased the skills, knowledge and expertise of our teachers was so clearly acknowledged in the report.”  Tim went on to highlight the College’s important links with business, industry and universities and said: “We provide multiple pathways for our students so they are so well prepared for the next step in life, whether that is university, which is the preferred route of the majority of our Level 3 students, or employment through our strong links with employers.”

Deputy Principal, Martin Simmons who worked directly with inspectors during the inspection said: “This is another watershed moment for Andover College. The report confirms what so many young people are now saying, namely, there is no need to leave the town when what is on offer in Andover is of such a high standard. Support for students, individualised learning plans, talented and creative teachers all lead to students who are ready for university or roles in industry.”

A century after women won the right to vote in the UK, Andover College students, alumni and staff shared their thoughts on the opportunities in education for women today.

Student, Charlotte Duffy expressed her immense gratitude to suffrage campaigners including Emmeline Pankhurst, saying: “Thanks to women fighting for our rights all those years ago, we now have access to education and careers that wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise. Some of my lecturers are strong females, however all of my teachers inspire me daily through their individual support, understanding and encouragement for me to succeed as a young woman soon to head into higher education.”

STEM student Emily Porter said: “Andover College has supported me and instilled the belief that I can do anything as a young woman in today’s society. I chose to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and History and in both my classroom and the college community, I’m treated as an individual learning on the same level footing as everyone else regardless of my gender, age or ethnic background.”

However even in the one hundred years since women gained the right to vote, recent media coverage has shown there is still some way to go to gain gender equality, particularly in for women in the workplace.

Meg Bullock, Digital Marketing Officer and former student at Andover College explained how the College is helping to bridge the gap by making great strides in education for women. She said: “In the past, we’ve see young women steer away from subjects stereotypically branded as ‘masculine’, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and particularly Digital. To inspire and encourage more young girls to think about going into these fields we have created a bespoke event, ‘Women into Digital Industries’ for students from local schools. Held on International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018, this exciting opportunity for Year 9 students, supported by forward-thinking local businesses, will showcase how a technological career path is both possible and desirable across a diverse range of business sectors. Our aim is to open up young girls’ perceptions of what is possible when you choose a future you enjoy and can excel in.”

A Level English Language students at Andover College recently had the opportunity to visit The Guardian newspaper’s headquarters for a feature-writing workshop. Led by the paper’s top journalists in London, students pitched ideas to the leaders and researched individual topics in the first-class offices, before going on to structure and edit professional articles in The Guardian’s specialist templates for print.

Rob Price, English Language lecturer commented on the relevance of this insider opportunity for his students, saying: “A Level English Language students are required to produce feature articles in a similar vein to those produced at The Guardian for coursework and exam assessments within their studies. The workshop was a valuable, real-life experience that will directly benefit students’ education at the College, as well as providing insight into careers in journalism for any future budding writers!”

Students who choose to study English A Levels at Andover College are exposed to multiple external opportunities and industry links to build both their confidence and skills in the subject area.
