Andover College celebrates opportunities in the creative industries

Andover College invited in hundreds of Year 9 pupils to Create!, an opportunity to actively consider their futures with a particular focus on the creative industries. Held on 6 March 2019, the event consisted of a range of exciting activities led by staff members, students and visiting universities.

Hosted at The Lights Theatre, the inspiring and eye-opening event included a hands-on experience zone featuring interactive activities from University of Portsmouth, University of Winchester, Winchester School of Art, Arts University Bournemouth and Risual at Andover. Meanwhile back in the College the staff, students and The Red Biscuit Company led a variety of workshops to open students’ eyes to the possibilities within the creative industries.

The UK’s creative industry sector is growing faster than any other sector in the UK contributing £92 billion to the economy. Government statistics show that in 2017 the number of people employed within the creative industries stood at just over two million, accounting for 6% of all UK jobs.

Louise, from Arts University Bournemouth, said: “It’s really important to show the diversity of options in the creative industries and the opportunities that are out there. It’s also key to challenge pupils’ perceptions of creative industries, for example architecture may be considered as not creative but today we’re showing how it can be!”

Fred and Josh, both third year Game Design students from Winchester School of Art were showcasing their final project and demonstrating to the students what they could potentially be creating in the future. Fred said: “This event plays an important role helping show young people what possibilities are out there and giving them a taste of what they can expect from the creative field. It’s so important to show the younger generation that they can go into a creative industry if that’s what they’re passionate about.”

Ben Stokes, Assistant Principal at Andover College said: “After the success of last year’s Women in Digital Industries event, we wanted to showcase the exciting opportunities that exist in the Creative Industries. This multi-billion-pound industry offers jobs you may never have considered before and this is why we feel so strongly about this event.”

At Andover College, the Creative Arts courses are some of the most popular and successful courses. They help to develop skills, knowledge and confidence which are valuable transferable skills. Learn more about the creative options Andover College has to offer at the next Open Day, 23 March 2019 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Register now!

Andover College’s Art and Design students go regional

Last week our Art and Design students took part in Andover College’s internal heat for the ARTiculation Prize.

The Roche Court Educational Trust’s ARTiculation Prize has been running for the past 12 years and every year they work with over 50 museums, galleries, universities and arts associations to develop ARTiculation. Around 4,000 young people a year take part in 10 regions in England, four in Scotland and four in Ireland. The ARTiculation Prize was designed to give young people a forum in which they are able to express their ideas on art.

The three students; Jack, Will and Eve spent many months in preparation for the internal heat at Andover College to decide who would represent the college regionally. The students presented on a range of subjects including, The Holocaust Memorial Museums, The Jaguar XJR-9 LM and The Importance of Exploring Materials in Craft. The students work and presentations were judged by David Dixon from Chapel Arts Studios and internationally renowned artist Kimvi Nguyen.

The internal heat was a great success and a great opportunity for our art and design students to take part in. A massive congratulations to the winner of the internal heats, Eve, who will now be going on to represent the college in the regional heat at Roche Court, New Art Centre on Tuesday 12th February 2019. The winner of the regional heat at Roche Court, will then go on to the national final at Clare College, Cambridge. So good luck Eve!

Keep an eye out for further updates on the amazing journey our students are on.

Andover College’s Computer Science students take on Reading Festival

Andover College’s Computer Science Students were recently challenged with the task of creating a new application that allows people to order tickets for Reading Festival. The biggest challenge of all being that they only had 5 hours to do it!

The students were given 5 hours to create the new application, making sure they included tickets for Day or Weekend Passes, Display Line-ups for the days they are attending and extras. They had to make sure that the app was easy to use and accessible for all. The students also had to calculate the cost of how much the application would be to run.

The students were put into small groups so that they could put their heads together and think about ideas for the new app. After the 5 hours were up, they had to present their new creation and explain how it had been done. The apps were all bespoke to the festival and had all the features you would need to get your tickets.

The students used various programming languages to create the applications including Python, VB, HTML, CSS and PHP.

Computer Science Lecturer, Edward, said: “This project allowed the learners to explore different programming languages and Extreme Programming (XP). It gave the learners a taste of what they could explore for their Programming Project they complete in the second year of their course. After the project the students started to consider different possibilities for their projects which included games, simulations, word processing applications, databases”

All students succeeded in the challenge and it has helped with preparation for their big project in their second year. Congratulations to all the students who took part!

London Institute of Banking & Finance University welcomes Andover College students

Ten students studying AAT (Accounting), Business and DipFS (Financial Studies) visited the London Institute of Banking & Finance University.

The trip kicked off with an interactive quiz where Andover College students came 1st and 2nd respectively out of 47 students who attended from other colleges. Throughout the day, students were given an overview of the degree programmes, student experience, careers and employability in Financial Services.

The final lecture was given by the inspirational Dean of the University, Peter Hahn, who covered the development of banking through the years. Peter has had an impressive career where he was not only a Managing Director of Citibank but was also a consultant for the Bank of England, Santander, Lloyds Banking Group and many other banks within the UK.

The students came away with an insight into future career prospects in the Financial Services sector and the qualifications which can be achieved.

Andover College’s Health and Social Care students gain insight into the Social Services

Andover College’s Health and Social Care students had the pleasure of talking to Anthony, Social Services worker and two university students all about Social Services and the safeguarding of children and young people.

Anthony, who works within Wiltshire Social Services, found time in his busy schedule to talk to the students about the role of a social worker and how they work with other agencies in the safeguarding of children and young people. Anthony brought along two university students, who are currently studying their Master’s Degree in social work, to talk to the students about university life.

The two university students were Kelly who is an ex Andover College student and is currently in her first year of completing her Master’s Degree and Lilly who is in her third and final year. Both are working within Wiltshire Social Services as part of their year placement

Lecturer Wendy Allen said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to hear first-hand about the experiences of being a social worker and the importance of their role.”

Wendy continued:” Both Kelly and Lilly were very honest about university life and the course they are currently taking. It was very useful for the students to be able to ask questions and gain tips on what to expect in their preliminary university interview. The information given to our students is invaluable and I am very grateful to Anthony, Kelly and Lilly in taking time out of their busy schedules to speak with the students.”

At Andover College we try our hardest to get as many guest speakers in as possible as we believe they give our students invaluable knowledge while sharing their experiences. Find out more about Andover College at our next open day.

Andover College’s Music Academy students have been creating their own bands

The students paired up, quizzed their partners then created a presentation based on their partners’ answers. This presentation had to include information about the person’s hobbies, musical qualities, future musical aspirations and they answered the question of ‘why I should be in your band’. They had to present the information to their class to help them decide who would be in a band together.

They spent time together in their bands coming up with a name, a unique selling point and what genre of music they were interested in playing, etc. This was so that each band has their own identity. Two of the chosen bands were named Childhood Trauma and Cherry valance, specialising in indie punk.

They will now be in this band for the rest of the academic year. During lessons they will practice together and either cover different songs or create originals. This will all lead up to them performing at live gigs at different venues throughout the year. We post about the upcoming gigs on our social media, so keep an eye out and show them some support.

Projects like these give the students invaluable real-life experience and help them progress not only their musical talent but also their team building skills. This is a project that our Music Lecturers run every year as they know it builds character and confidence.

Music Performance Lecturer, Chris, said: ‘For the band project the students get the opportunity to open the show for an actual touring band. We do this every year as we know it gives them the skills they need for university and the music industry. We always get good results from the students as it gives them ownership of their band and the chance to show what they have learnt so far.’

Music Performance Student, Grace, said ‘Taking part in the band project has been a good opportunity for me to showcase my new skills and develop myself as a musician.’

Our Music Department do all they can to make ensure that when the students finish college, they have all the knowledge and experience they need to go on to university or into the Music Industry. Find out more about our music courses here.

Maths equals a great experience for Andover College students

Maths Inspiration is one of the largest maths enrichment programmes for teenagers in the UK. It’s a chance to experience the UK’s most inspiring maths speakers live, in big venues, presenting mathematics in the context of exciting, real-world situations.

The event’s four speakers brought Maths to life with talks about ‘Maths on the back of an envelope’, ‘The Shape of Escape’ and ‘The Greatest Maths Mistakes Ever’.

One of our students said ‘It was very entertaining, funny and inspiring and It was good to see how maths is used in all aspects of life.”

Our students also took part in the UK Senior Maths Challenge. The Mathematical Challenges aim to stimulate mathematical problem solving.

Taking part in the Mathematical Challenges is a rewarding experience for all students and the highest performers in the Challenge are awarded either bronze, silver or gold certificates depending on how well they did. We are proud to announce that 8 of our students were awarded Bronze and 2 were awarded Silver.

Maths Lecturer, Claire, said: “This is a great achievement for our 1st year maths students and we are proud of all of their efforts!”

Students planning to ace the BASE competition

Some 21 Andover College students from a variety of courses have taken part in the first heat of BASE, the ICAEW (Institution of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales)’s National Business and Accounting competition for students in school or college aged 16-17. The students had to work in teams to address the business and ethical challenges presented to them. Representatives from ICAEW came to the College to mentor students throughout this initial process and were able to see first hand how enthused our students are.

Lecturer Hannah Murphy said: “This was a unique and exciting experience, students are able to engage in business challenges that enable them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.” More than 13,000 students from hundreds of schools and colleges have participated in BASE since its launch, supported by numerous ICAEW Chartered Accountants and organisations from across the business world as well as the public and voluntary sectors.”

Hannah continued: “To have competitions like this available to students is invaluable and develops a multitude of skills, so my thanks to ICAEW for making this possible.”

The students are working towards a presentation in which they have to decide in their teams from a series of proposals which best suits the investor. This needs to be completed by Easter 2019 and students will be working on this from now until then, in the hope they pass this heat and make it to the finals, so watch this space!

Andover College students sprinkle festive cheer with their Peter Pan Pantomime

Students across Andover College’s Performing and Creative Departments recently excelled with their Christmas Pantomime of Peter Pan at The Lights Theatre. The production engaged parents, staff and members of the public, providing the audience with plentiful Christmas cheer this December and students with the opportunity to showcase their talent and skills in a professional setting.

The Pantomime called on students from multiple course areas to fulfil the vast brief that made up the show’s production. Extensive rehearsal sessions were held for Performing Arts, Music and Dance students, whilst Hair and Media students created and finessed the look of each character. Stage Management students expertly controlled the set design, lighting and sound for each of the three shows.

Head of Performing Arts, Rob Collier said: “The pantomime is an important part of the Christmas tradition at Andover College and is a great way to start the Christmas period with some festive cheer.”

Rob continued: “The pantomime provides huge opportunities for various departments to get together and work in a collaborative way. It’s also a great opportunity for the students to gain a strong understanding of the environment that they would experience in the industry. Our talented students all pulled together to produce a top, professionally-presented panto, they should all be very pleased with the show and their talents and commitment!”
