Maths equals a great experience for Andover College students

Maths Inspiration is one of the largest maths enrichment programmes for teenagers in the UK. It’s a chance to experience the UK’s most inspiring maths speakers live, in big venues, presenting mathematics in the context of exciting, real-world situations.

The event’s four speakers brought Maths to life with talks about ‘Maths on the back of an envelope’, ‘The Shape of Escape’ and ‘The Greatest Maths Mistakes Ever’.

One of our students said ‘It was very entertaining, funny and inspiring and It was good to see how maths is used in all aspects of life.”

Our students also took part in the UK Senior Maths Challenge. The Mathematical Challenges aim to stimulate mathematical problem solving.

Taking part in the Mathematical Challenges is a rewarding experience for all students and the highest performers in the Challenge are awarded either bronze, silver or gold certificates depending on how well they did. We are proud to announce that 8 of our students were awarded Bronze and 2 were awarded Silver.

Maths Lecturer, Claire, said: “This is a great achievement for our 1st year maths students and we are proud of all of their efforts!”

Students planning to ace the BASE competition

Some 21 Andover College students from a variety of courses have taken part in the first heat of BASE, the ICAEW (Institution of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales)’s National Business and Accounting competition for students in school or college aged 16-17. The students had to work in teams to address the business and ethical challenges presented to them. Representatives from ICAEW came to the College to mentor students throughout this initial process and were able to see first hand how enthused our students are.

Lecturer Hannah Murphy said: “This was a unique and exciting experience, students are able to engage in business challenges that enable them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.” More than 13,000 students from hundreds of schools and colleges have participated in BASE since its launch, supported by numerous ICAEW Chartered Accountants and organisations from across the business world as well as the public and voluntary sectors.”

Hannah continued: “To have competitions like this available to students is invaluable and develops a multitude of skills, so my thanks to ICAEW for making this possible.”

The students are working towards a presentation in which they have to decide in their teams from a series of proposals which best suits the investor. This needs to be completed by Easter 2019 and students will be working on this from now until then, in the hope they pass this heat and make it to the finals, so watch this space!

Andover College students sprinkle festive cheer with their Peter Pan Pantomime

Students across Andover College’s Performing and Creative Departments recently excelled with their Christmas Pantomime of Peter Pan at The Lights Theatre. The production engaged parents, staff and members of the public, providing the audience with plentiful Christmas cheer this December and students with the opportunity to showcase their talent and skills in a professional setting.

The Pantomime called on students from multiple course areas to fulfil the vast brief that made up the show’s production. Extensive rehearsal sessions were held for Performing Arts, Music and Dance students, whilst Hair and Media students created and finessed the look of each character. Stage Management students expertly controlled the set design, lighting and sound for each of the three shows.

Head of Performing Arts, Rob Collier said: “The pantomime is an important part of the Christmas tradition at Andover College and is a great way to start the Christmas period with some festive cheer.”

Rob continued: “The pantomime provides huge opportunities for various departments to get together and work in a collaborative way. It’s also a great opportunity for the students to gain a strong understanding of the environment that they would experience in the industry. Our talented students all pulled together to produce a top, professionally-presented panto, they should all be very pleased with the show and their talents and commitment!”

Andover College’s History students welcomed Mr Briant in to their classroom when he came in to have a look at the WW1 exhibition the students created to commemorate the anniversary of the end of the First World War. Mr Briant spoke to them all about his service during World War 2 happily answering all of the students’ questions with memories of his first-hand experience of war and a great sense of humour.

Mr Briant is a 72-year-old veteran who joined the war in 1942 serving in the Royal Artillery. He drove mules carrying ammunition from place to place throughout the conflict. He told the students all about his experience from how he joined the army to all the places he visited.

Student Issy said: ‘It was an interesting talk and it was amazing to hear real life stories from an experienced veteran’s perspective. We learn about the subject during lessons using lots of different resources but to hear what it was like from someone who witnessed it first hand was a completely different way to learn.’

Andover College History Lecturer, Caroline, said: It was a huge privilege to be part of the visit from World War 2 veteran, Mr Briant. Students got the chance to meet someone who lived through the conflict and who talked and shared stories about their experiences of war. Visits like this enhance students’ understanding and put their knowledge into context far more effectively than a textbook!”

Head of Centre, Ben Stokes also said: ‘It is so important that we educate our learners on important historic events that have helped shape our way of life. The work at the exhibition shows a remarkable level of maturity that highlights the horrors of the Great War. Understanding this and what people went through in the early 20th Century can help us make the right decisions in the future. Caroline our History teacher and her students should be commended for how they have approached the events surrounding World War I and the level of academic intellect shown in their work is remarkable.’

At Andover College the emphasis is on enhancing the learning experience at every opportunity, to find out more come along to an open event.

Andover College’s Music Academy students welcomed Label Managers Rob and Lesley from Lockjaw Records on Thursday. Lockjaw records came in to the college to talk to Music Academy students about the music industry and how to run your own record label. They delivered a fun and interactive talk that showed the students the ins and outs of how to run a record label and included activities that got the students thinking about creating their own record label.

Lockjaw Records is a European punk rock and hardcore label founded in 1997 by brothers Jack, Sam and Ben. The label was then relaunched by Rob in 2011 with Lesley joining him in 2014. Now in 2018 the label is supported by a community of hardworking individuals from across the European scene.

Music lecturer, Nick, said “It is an amazing experience for our students to hear what the industry is like from genuine music industry professionals. The talk was great as it fitted in with what our students are currently studying, and gave them great insight for their assignments”

Label Manager, Rob, said: ‘’It was a fantastic experience coming in and meeting the future artists and talents who will be helping the scene stay alive for another generation.
