English Language students get bespoke training with The Guardian newspaper

A Level English Language students at Andover College recently had the opportunity to visit The Guardian newspaper’s headquarters for a feature-writing workshop. Led by the paper’s top journalists in London, students pitched ideas to the leaders and researched individual topics in the first-class offices, before going on to structure and edit professional articles in The Guardian’s specialist templates for print.

Rob Price, English Language lecturer commented on the relevance of this insider opportunity for his students, saying: “A Level English Language students are required to produce feature articles in a similar vein to those produced at The Guardian for coursework and exam assessments within their studies. The workshop was a valuable, real-life experience that will directly benefit students’ education at the College, as well as providing insight into careers in journalism for any future budding writers!”

Students who choose to study English A Levels at Andover College are exposed to multiple external opportunities and industry links to build both their confidence and skills in the subject area. As well as the recent trip to The Guardian’s offices, students also appeared on Channel 5’s talk show ‘The Wright Stuff’ whilst English Literature students saw Ian McKellan star in a highly-anticipated performance of King Lear this year.
