Cambridge success for Andover College chemistry students
This summer, AS Andover College students accelerated into the science industry by triumphing in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge. Sam Sutton’s skill and enthusiasm earned him a Gold Award, placing him in the top 8% of applicants. Students Liming Yang and Beth Hanson achieved Silver and Copper Awards, securing overall success for the College.
The annual competition, created by the renowned University of Cambridge, provides students in further education with the opportunity to stand out. The tough exam sets out to test natural abilities and determine today’s up and coming scientists. Despite being described as a test that cannot be revised for, each student received expert support from lecturers which resulted in success in a higher setting.
Paul Roberts, lecturer of chemistry at Andover College has entered students involved in the challenge for the past three years and is delighted with this year’s results. He said: “It has been an academically exceptional year for the chemistry department. In my classroom there is endless support, both from myself and peers, for an array of bright and able students who buzz off of each other’s individual successes.”
When presented with news of his Gold Award, Sam explained how the small class sizes at Andover College have allowed him to build personal relationships with his lecturers, which as a result has helped him to excel in his chosen subjects. He continued: “Andover College provides a welcoming environment of like-minded individuals and since starting here, it has helped to consolidate my plans for the future!” After completing his A Levels, Sam intends to study a Science-related degree at the University of Cambridge, whilst Liming is interested in studying medicine and Beth has future ambitions in the veterinary field.
Eight Andover College A2 students have also achieved awards at this year’s UK Chemistry Olympiad ran by the Royal Society of Chemistry, including A*A*A* student Daniel Phillips.
The College has active involvement in sourcing external opportunities for students, from finding work placements to sourcing competitions and challenges that expose young talent, both to universities and the industry.
