A Beauty Therapy student from Andover College recently treated 92-year-old local resident, Miss Myrtle Stammers, to her first ever manicure. Student Kayla-May Bulley and others taking the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at Andover College are upping both their community presence and client experience by introducing a new monthly service to residents of the independent living scheme at Lion Oak Court.

Delivered in their on-site beauty salon at Lion Oak, Miss Stammers was thoroughly impressed with both the process and result of the treatment.  Commenting on how much she enjoyed her experience, she said: “This was the first manicure I had ever had, and by coincidence, I was Kayla’s first ever client. The hand and arm massage was very soothing and the finished result on the nails was excellent. I will certainly go again when the students next visit.”

Beauty Therapy Curriculum Leader and organiser of the monthly visit to Lion Oak Court, Pauline Reynolds believes introducing this opportunity to the students will prove invaluable to their professional development. Pauline said: “There are many facets to the professional development of our students. Naturally they need to learn the essential skills for their chosen specialism but they also need to have the confidence and the experience of working with clients and potentially managing their own businesses.”

Pauline continued: “These visits to Lion Oak will do wonders for our students’ confidence when dealing with the public as well as informing them of the practicalities of working as Beauty Therapists. Building a regular clientele, self-promotion and networking are key skills that are all exercised on these trips to Lion Oak’s salon and it is a delight to be providing a quality service to the local community on behalf of Andover College.”

Moving forward, the College hopes to introduce further treatments at Lion Oak Court, including a barbering service for the male residents to diversify options for the growing clientele. As well as gaining on-going experience in the local community, students on the Hairdressing and Beauty courses at Andover College also have access to multiple training and commercial salons on site and learn desirable professional skills from practising industry experts.
