Andover College A-Level student awarded Nuffield Research Placement
Andover College Chemistry and Biology A-Level student Lucy Scullard is celebrating the news that she has been awarded one of the sought-after Nuffield Research Placements which provide students with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.
A Nuffield Research Placement is designed to inspire and motivate students, helping provide the skills and confidence needed to get a place at a top university. They are only open to students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) course.
Lucy is due to spend the month of August at Winchester Science Centre working on a digestion exhibit. Commenting on the opportunity she said: “I was encouraged to apply by my Chemistry lecturer Paul Roberts who really knows all the students in his class and what our individual interests are. Paul knew I would be interested in the Nuffield placement as it will be invaluable in helping expand my understanding of the career opportunities beyond the lab.”
Following her summer at the Science Centre Lucy will submit a Nuffield Research Placement Report and design a scientific poster. At the Celebration Event she’ll meet all the Nuffield students from the region when they will collectively celebrate their achievements. Many students put their projects forward for a CREST Gold Award, a well respected accreditation scheme which can be included on university applications.
On her return to Andover College Lucy will complete the second year of her A Levels, following which she plans to go to university to study Biochemistry which could possibly lead to scientific research.
Explaining why he recommended Lucy apply for the placement, Chemistry lecturer Paul said: “Lucy’s natural ability in Chemistry, Biology and Mathamatics was apparent from the very start of the course in September. Her all round scientific outlook and hard-working attitude is suited to the challenge and demands that a Nuffield Research Placement will expect from such a gifted and tallented student”
