Active Andover students raise £2000 for Red Nose Day
Andover College’s fundraising activities for Red Nose Day went up a notch this year with students going head to head against their teachers in a charity football match and a sponsored climb up the 02 arena. Students and staff across all areas of the College from Sports to Health and Social Care got involved in several events building up to the big day on Friday 24 March, raising £2000 and counting to support Comic Relief’s work.
The College’s Health and Social Care department raised an impressive £800 for scaling London’s famous O2 arena in a 90-minute charity climb. Lecturer Rachel Cox was delighted with the students’ fundraising total, saying: “It was an extremely empowering achievement for the students to raise a great amount of money for such a brilliant charity, as well as conquering their own fears in the process. It was an overwhelmingly positive experience all round and the total sum is just the cherry on top!”
Another stand-out event from the College for Comic Relief this year was the Staff vs. Students football match, held at Portway Stadium. Filled to the brim with supporters, the game saw Football Academy students win 3-1 in a fun-filled and exciting match.
Lloyd Kettlety, Sports lecturer and player for the staff’s team said: “The game was a brilliant opportunity for various departments to come together to aid a great cause. Our staff side ranged from ex-pros turned Sports lecturers to IT and Motor Vehicle teachers and although there was a competitive element to the match, set at the heart of it was a strong sense of inclusion which is very typical of both the charity’s values and Andover College too.”
Red Nose Day is an annual charity milestone that sets out to transform lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities, raising over £73M so far in this year’s event.
Deputy Principal Martin Simmons firmly believes in the importance of a community approach at the College and how it benefits students’ success. He explains: “Opportunities like Red Nose Day, which unite different learning disciplines and encourage wide-spread involvement from students and staff are what sets Andover apart from other colleges. Not only does it help to form support systems between peers; it also encourages fantastic working relationships between the students and their lecturers, ultimately making for a memorable and rewarding learning experience.”
