Largest Maths Enrichment Programme humours Andover College Maths students

It’s hard to imagine there is such a thing as a ‘stand-up mathematician’ as in a stand-up comedian but they do exist. A2 Maths students from Andover College thoroughly enjoyed both the facts and humour of such a performance when they recently attended Maths Inspiration in Winchester. Maths Inspiration is one the largest maths enrichment programmes for teenagers in the UK featuring the most inspiring maths speakers, live in a big venue, presenting mathematics in the context of exciting, real-world situations.

Speakers at the event included Matt Parker who is known as the ‘stand-up mathematician. and the only person to hold the prestigious title of London Mathematical Society Popular Lecturer while simultaneously having a sold-out comedy show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Matt uses humour to engage his audience as he discusses the use of maths.

Chris Budd is a Professor of Applied Maths at the University of Bath and is heavily involved in climate science. He works closely with the Met office and explained the maths of biscuits to the students!

Finally Rob Eastaway, an author whose books on everyday maths include the bestselling Why Do Buses Come In Threes? and The Hidden Maths of Sport. He appears regularly on BBC Radio 4 and 5 Live to talk about the maths of everyday life and has given maths talks across the world to audiences of all ages

Maths Lecturer Claire Reid said: “Obviously to study Maths at A2 these students have a talent for the subject. What was so interesting and inspiring for them all to see though was the huge variety of opportunities and options that await them. Maths is connected to every aspect of everyday life and the speakers delivered that message beautifully.”

Andover College offers a number of Mathematics courses including AS and A2 Mathematics, AS and A2 Further Maths and AS and A2 Use of Maths.
Andover College students enjoy One Big Sleepout

A number of students from Andover College have signed up to take part in One Big
Sleepout,a fund and awareness raising initiative for homeless people in
Hampshire. Organised by the Society of St James, a charity based in
Southampton, students, lecturers and staff spent the night in the College’s
Music Academy garden with nothing but a thin piece of tenting between them and
the stars on Wednesday 27 March 2013.

The Society of St James is a
Hampshire-based homelessness charity, providing accommodation and support to
over 1000 people at any given time. The goal is for each person sleeping out to
raise Ł40 which would provide someone who is homeless, a bed for the night, 3
meals and a towel and toiletries. The message is simple ‘giving up a
warm, cosy bed for one night will help others to offer the hope of a ‘Home for
Life’ to those vulnerable to homelessness in Hampshire.’

Jem Rycraft, Performing Arts
Lecturer and lead for the Big Sleepout at Andover College said: “Although we
have had many students sign up for the project, it certainly was a dig deep
moment for some. It is a big deal offering to sleep out in March and yet
it is only for one night when homeless people facing the prospect every
evening.”

Media students are taking
the initiative one stage further. To further raise awareness of
homelessness they are making a documentary as part of their study of factual
programming and community media production on social action initiatives. Thus
far, the students have visited River House in Andover, Southampton Street
Intensive hostel in Southampton and the Avondale project in Woolston. Next
term, the students will be visiting a food bank, a healthcare for homeless
service provided by the NHS. Later in May, Jem Rycraft will be undertaking a
trek of the Himalayas and spending three days and two nights volunteering with
the homeless in India. The footage captured will be used by the media students
to create a documentary about homelessness contrasting the provisions of such
in the UK and in India.

Andover College in negotiations to take over the Portway Stadium

Andover College is in final negotiations to take over the running of Andover’s Portway Stadium. It is anticipated that the College will shortly finalise an agreement with Test Valley Borough Council to sign a ten year lease for the stadium.

Picture courtesy of the Andover Advertiser

Andover College’s Assistant Principal Stuart Barlow, who has led the stadium negotiations said: “Although Andover College will be taking over the running of the Portway Stadium, it will be football across Andover and the wider community which will benefit. We want to improve the football training provision of the College and support a range of competitive opportunities to inspire young players and teams in the area.”

Test Valley Borough Council undertook an extensive exercise to bring forward bidders to ensure the stadium gained a new lease of life and security for its long term future.

Councillor Tony Ward, Leisure and Wellbeing Portfolio Holder said: “We hope to agree terms with Andover College for a ten year lease for Andover’s Portway Stadium. We were determined to keep the site as a sporting asset for future generations to enjoy, following its previous demise. This agreement will ensure that the ground can once host matches at a senior level, as well as providing a resource for budding new players. We are currently also in negotiations with footballing bodies with the aim of raising a contribution towards bringing the facilities up to modern standards in additions to contributions from HCC and TVBC directly.”

Having a stadium in Andover will enable the College to further develop its successful Football Academies currently based at the Andover town campus and the Winchester based campus, Sparsholt College. These academies look to develop talented and committed players with the potential to progress to a career as a professional player. The College also uses the Academy as a springboard for career opportunities in coaching, massage, physiotherapy and management.

The Academy program caters for players of all abilities and the Portway ground will provide a venue for the Academy first team side who play in the Conference Youth Alliance Football League with fixtures taking place each Wednesday. For Andover College based Academy students, the Portway will also be the venue for classroom and practical training sessions. The College will also use the stadium as the home ground for a new senior football team, applying for entry into the league structure for season 2013/2014, which will draw players from current students in the Andover and Sparsholt programmes, previous Academy players and the local community.

With support from both Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire County Council, the refurbishment programme will enable the College to convert the current Clubhouse into modern learning centres for football and other sporting students. Facilities will also be made available for hire by local community groups and a dedicated space will be created for the delivery of the Andover 14-19 Consortium Ready to Work training programme.

For further information on Andover College please call 01264 360000 or visit www.andover.ac.uk.

ENDS

Read all about Andover College's feature film Scrawl at Horror Cult Films

If you’ve been a follower of www.horrorcultfilms.co.uk , you will have noticed several news items about Andover College's independent horror film, Scrawl, and perhaps even seen a review of the short film made prior to it called Motto which is connected to the feature film. With its original storyline, skewed vision and unique characters, Scrawl looks like it should stand out amidst all the remakes and rehashes that seem to dominate the genre at the moment and in my opinion could be The independent horror film to watch this year. Dr Lenera was lucky enough to talk to Peter Hearn, the Writer/Director/Producer of Scrawl, and Annabelle Le Gresley, Producer and Star of the film, about their project.

Read the full interview here http://horrorcultfilms.co.uk/2013/01/horror-cult-films-interviewswriterdirectorproducer-peter-hearn-and-producerstar-annabelle-le-gresley-about-their-upcoming-independent-horror-scrawl/

Dick Whittington came to Andover last month and in the process of seeking his fortune he showed off many of the College’s curriculum departments in the very best of showbiz light. It is performing arts and dance students who take centre stage and with their brilliant acting skills and comic timing and high kicking prowess, treat the audience to a panto of professional standard.

In the process of becoming these entertaining, believable characters some talented people have worked their magic as the media make-up brushes create the facial prosthetics, fur, whiskers, wrinkles and the pantomime dame in all his/her eye lashed and lipsticked glory. The hairdressing students have wielded their hairbrushes and teased the cast’s hair into all manner of character styles.

Stage management students designed the many different props and scenery needed to transform the Lights and during each performance managed the set changes, lighting, sound and special effects.

There really is nothing like listening to live music and students from the Music Academy didn’t disappoint having formed an orchestra with a string, brass, woodwind and percussion section.

The Deputy Mayor and escort, attended the show and were both seen to laugh throughout. In fact the Deputy Mayor is reported to have said that the panto was the most entertaining engagement she’d attended in her term of office so far!

For more information on the Performing Arts and Music courses available at Andover College, please call 01264 360000 or visit www.andover.ac.uk .

ENDS

Have some RESPECT for Andover College’s free music event

Andover College is throwing open its theatre doors to host Imagine: Live, a Pro-Equality Day to raise awareness of and celebrate diversity. The free music event is being held on Friday 15 February 2013, from 11.00am to 2.30pm with the College’s Music Academy students performing a broad range of acoustic acts.

Inspired by the College-wide ‘Respect’ campaign, students have devised and co-ordinated the day of entertainment and education to leave the audience feeling inspired and uplifted.

College Principal, Tim Jackson said: “For me the Respect campaign is about human dignity and respecting people for their humanity, and not judging them on any other level. It's a campaign that is designed to test people's established thoughts and ideas which can so easily become unconscious ingrained prejudices and allow them to reflect on these and, I'd suggest in most cases, make changes. Being treated with respect by the whole College community and successfully completing their course is an outcome we would all want for our students. I very much hope that the messages from our Respect campaign stay with our students (and staff of course), for life – and impact on everything they do!”

Representatives from a wide range of local and national charities will also be attending, an opportunity for guests to learn more about their important work.

David Watters, Music Lecturer said: “This FREE event is open to all and we would welcome individuals and groups from all areas of the local community to pop along at any point throughout the day.”

Guests are invited to arrive at the College’s main reception from which they will be directed to the Theatre.

ADDRESS: Andover College, Charlton Road, Andover, Hampshire, SP10 1EJ

MAIN ENQUIRIES: 01264 360000 or info@andover.ac.uk

PRESS OFFICE ONLY: 01962 797563 or press@sparsholt.ac.uk

MUSIC DEPARTMENT ENQUIRIES: David.Watters@sparsholt.ac.uk

ENDS
